MARKET – Among the films on George
W. Bush to be presented in Cannes, Robert Greenwald’s UNCOVERED
is a mini event.
Born out of Sceneries’ ashes, Cinema Libre International
is coming to Cannes with ‘Uncovered : The War on Iraq’,
Robert Greenwald’s fire-brand, which decontrusts through
interviews of former ambassadors and CIA analysts the alleged
reasons of the current war in Iraq. The film will be screened
at the Arcade Cinema on May 18, in the presence of Ambassador
Joe Wilson, a former US Ambassador to Baghdad. On the day before,
the whole team will be in Paris at Maison de la Radio for a meeting
with the French and the Foreign Press. Greenwald’s film
has generated last fall a quite amazing type of distribution.
Uncovered has been shown simultaneously in most major US cities,
in thousands of so-called ‘Tupperware’ house-parties.
“Greenwald has redefined the film-club” explains Philippe
Lenglet who is in charge of Cinema Libre sales and coproductions.
It’s one of the ways to think anew independent distribution”
« Uncovered » in US theatres on
August 13.
The film wiill be released under cinema Libre’s banner on
next August 13 with 50 prints before a DVD version be launched
a few weeks ahead of the American presidential election. Uncovered
is the type of film which found its place at Cinema Libre, the
new structure created by Philippe Lenglet and Philippe Diaz (
the producer of Leos Carax’ Bad Blood , among others). «Cinema
Libre has first been made for post-production, mais is currently
becoming a meeting place for all independents. Several projects,
from US$300,000 to US$10million, are now coming to us. The idea
is to generate a sort of a pool for technicians and artists.”
While it privileges diversity in its line-up (along with other
low-budget movies of various genres), the company finds itself,
though, in the heart of the American protest wave as it also proposes
“Unprecedented : The 2000 Presidentail Election”,
a quite hot documentary on George W. Bush’s leection four
years back. Cinema Libre is based in Los Angeles, in the San Fernando
Valley.
